Genshin Impact: 5 Starter Tips For New Players (PART 2)

In my previous post, I mentioned 5 things that should get any new Genshin Impact player started. In this post, I'll mention 5 more tips and tricks for new players, as well as explaining a few things that can sometimes be just as confusing.

So, without further ado, welcome to my 5 top tips for new Genshin Impact players, part 2!

My top 5 Genshin Impact Tips for Starters!

  1. Be alert to Events!
  2. Characters and Banners
  3. Resources
  4. Artifacts and Sets
  5. Spira Abyss

1. Be Alert to Events!

The Exquisite Night Chimes event for Lantern Rite (2023).

Genshin Impact is loaded with events throughout each patch/update. You can expect a new event every month and lasts to about two to three weeks! These events exists both in-game as well as web events.

Genshin Impact: Iridescence in Papers web event for Lantern Rite (2023).

These events are important because they have a LOT of rewards, and most importantly PRIMOGEMS. They're also one of the main sources for any Genshin gamer to stack up primogems along with other rare materials, such as the Crown of Insight. It also sometimes comes with event-specific weapons, like the Taukabou Shigure sword from the recent Akitsu Kimodameshi event in December 2022, or Dodoco Tales catalyst from the Midsummer Island Adventure event in June 2021.

Not only do these events carry good rewards and weapons, but they also, like the World Quests, gives MASSIVE lore dump to players so we can make sense of the whole game so far. One of the events that I wished I known and experience first-hand was the Unreconciled Stars event, all the way back in November 2020.  This specific event didn't just introduce good characters, like Fischl and Mona, but it also gave players a very memorable encounter with a certain Harbinger before his redemption arc in Sumeru's recent Archon Quests!

The event itself had a significant impact when you meet two specific characters, one triggered when you start playing their Story Quest and the other during a certain purple Archon Quest, where the dialogue changes slightly depending on whether you have met them and completed the event before. It was a cool little detail that the Genshin Impact team added, and it really shows how these interactions within the game can being its consequences.

So to some players, paying extra attention to these events can give them a better experience when playing the game overall, and hey, the rewards are massive bonuses so it's basically a win-win situation!

2. Character and Banners

Ayaka and Traveller (Lumine) after the Archon Quest.

Now comes the fun part about Genshin Impact— the playable characters! This is a very complicated part in Genshin since I used to struggle with it, so I'll explain in more detail in my next post! But here's the quick overview of the characters!

Characters

There are two types of characters in this game— the 4-star characters, which you can get super easily by either free wishes or exchange in events like Lantern Rite or in the shop, and the 5-star characters, which you can only get through wishes on the Promotional Character banner.

A common misconception about characters is that having a 5-star character doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a great team composition (team comp for short), nor does it mean that all the 4-star characters are bad. In fact, there isn't exactly a character that is considered "bad", they just need the right team comp to bring out their potential.

Their potential is usually locked behind constellations, which can either give you "quality of life" or increase your character's overall damage. Here are some of the characters' constellations for Childe and Heizou.

Chilld's C1 Passive over his skill.

Heizou's C1 "buff" for his skill.

There's a total of 6 Constellations that you can unlock for each character. This can take between weeks to months to unlock their Constellations, especially for the 5-star characters since they're the "premium" in the list. The only character that you can unlock their constellation for free is none other than the Traveller, since you can get their Cons from either the AR Rewards, Statue of the Seven, Archon Quests or the shops (specifically in Liyue).

Banners

We've been hearing the term "banner" a lot now, haven't we? Well, that's where you'll get your characters or weapons! There are 3 types of banners:
  1. Limited character banner
  2. Weapon banner
  3. Standard banner
The limited character and weapons banner lasts about 3 weeks for every patch, while the standard banner is basically permanent. We're not including the novice/beginner banner since that lasts for only 20 pulls and is more like a starter wishing banner for new players.

The limited character and weapons banner will refresh every half of the patch, so save up primogems to get your favourite character!

While the standard banner is basically permanent. You can get Keqing, Qiqi, Mona, Diluc, Jean and Tighnari in this banner along with some of Skyward weapon series and other 5-star weapons (usually related to the characters in this banner).

They are also considered different, hence why they have different Fates to pull on their banners.

There's also a whole pity system but again, I'll save that in my next post so stay tune!

3. Resources

Like every other game that you probably have played, Genshin Impact puts a hard emphasis on resources. You basically need a lot of them to level up your characters, weapons, making food, crafting items, and sometimes for your commissions. Luckily, you can get them all while exploring the map.

Bad news?

They can ge down to 0 just as fast as you collect them. And some materials are SUPER limited, like the Strange Tooth in Dragonspine, or super annoying to look for, like the Scarabs in the Sumeru desert.

So the more resources you have collected, the better quality of life you'll get.

4. Artifacts and Sets

Artifacts are the tricky bit in Genshin, since they give your characters bonus to their overall damage. But to put it short, each artifact grants a extra damage, healing, or ability boost to your character in their main stats and sub stats.

They also come in various "sets", which gives additional perks to the character equipping that specific set. A 2-piece set of an artifact will typically grant extra damage bonuses, healing properties, extend a character's health and so on. While a 4-pieces set will enhance the properties of the whole set on the equipping character.

Usually, you would want to farm the 5-star artifacts in domains since you can level a piece until level 20, which increases the stats within that artifact. That would be at AR45 since you're guaranteed a 5-star artifact, however you can also get pretty good artifacts before that, like the Gladiator's Finale set.

5. Spira Abyss

At the moment, Spiral Abyss is the only known end-game content in the entirety of Genshin Impact. It's basically a solo game mechanic where you use your built characters to fight the enemies in each level and receive the rewards.

Although it is relatively easy from floor 1 to floor 8, it will be a bit of a challenge especially at Floor 5 since it starts to divide the challenge into two sections.

Floor 5 with First half and Second half enemies.

And after completing all the challenges, Floor 9 to Floor 12 will be unlocked. These floors are considered rewarding since they give 150 primogems for getting 9 stars, and other rewards like artifacts.

The floors also resets and gives you different bonuses that you can use to your advantage. So build up your characters and try 36-Star the abyss!

Conclusion

So that's about wrap it up for my other 5 starter tips! And most importantly, have fun while you're playing the game!
